Facsimile of a broadside (ca. 1570) signed by ten prominent rabbis of the 16th century including Elisha Gallico, Moshe Alshich and others, condemning the book Meʼor Enayim by Rabbi Azariah de Rossi and forbidding any Jew to possess it in his home. Later editions of De Rossi's book omitted the more controversial sections. "The broadside edict ("gezeirah") was originally mounted on the verso of the t.p. [of Meʼor ʻEnayim. It] announces that Joseph Karo's wish (Karo had died during the ensuing controversy of the book's publication) was that the book be burnt and that it is incumbent upon any Jew who is in possession of the book to destroy it. This sheet is of the utmost rarity, not found in copies of Meʼor ʻEnayim located, and was known only through a reference in Ch. Y.D. Azulay, in Machzik Beracha, Orach Chaim, p. 133."-- Sotheby Hebraica Catalog, 6/26/84, lot no. 9. The volume with the original broadside is owned by Mr. Ludwig Jesselson, who commissioned the facsimile and presented it to the Yeshiva University Library. Included are a facsimile of the original broadside, a photocopy, and a copy of the page from the Sotheby catalog describing the items.
